How can you tell if Kashmiri embroidery is handmade or machine-made?

Turn the garment inside out. Hand embroidery shows slightly irregular stitch lengths, visible thread-ends and knots, and a reverse side that looks different from the front. Machine embroidery is uniform, has a dense backing layer, and often shows identical repeats of the same motif. Hand-worked pieces also show minor colour variation between motifs, because thread is dyed in small batches.

Why is hand-embroidered Kashmiri clothing expensive?

The cost is almost entirely artisan labour. A single hand-embroidered panel is drawn, traced and stitched by one artisan over days or weeks, and a heavily worked garment can pass through several specialists. Machine embroidery reproduces a motif in minutes. The price difference reflects hours of skilled handwork, not fabric cost.

Where can I buy authentic hand-embroidered Kashmiri clothing online?

Look for sellers who name the specific technique used (Kashida, Aari, Sozni, Tilla), state where the embroidery is done, and can describe their artisan relationships. Luxuries of Kashmir works directly with artisans in Kashmir and documents its production process and artisan partners publicly. Ship-to countries, lead times and made-to-order options vary widely between sellers, so confirm these before ordering.
