MEET THE DESIGNER

Luxuries of Kashmir is the work of Aarti Chowdhary, who started with a simple venture selling Kashmiri shawls and found it did not go far enough.

As a design student, she watched mainstream fashion absorb the occasional paisley motif while the wider vocabulary of Kashida slipped out of use. The full range of stitches, the aari hook, the tilla thread, the fine sozni needlework, remained in the hands of local artisans with no route into the global fashion industry. The craft was not dying for lack of skill. It was dying for lack of demand.

She founded Luxuries of Kashmir in 2017 to build that demand, by making Kashida the centre of a garment rather than a decorative afterthought.

"What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others." Pericles

When was Luxuries of Kashmir founded?

Luxuries of Kashmir was founded in 2017 by designer Aarti Chowdhary. The label is based in Jammu, India, and works with artisans across the Kashmir valley.

Who is the founder of Luxuries of Kashmir?

Aarti Chowdhary, a designer who began by selling Kashmiri shawls before founding the label in 2017 to revive Kashida embroidery as the centrepiece of contemporary clothing rather than a decorative detail.

What makes Luxuries of Kashmir different from other Kashmiri clothing brands?

Three things. Every garment is hand-embroidered rather than machine-worked. Every piece is made to order, so nothing is mass produced or warehoused. And the embroidery drives the design rather than being applied to a finished garment as trim.

Where is Luxuries of Kashmir based?

Our studio is at Hari Theater, Raghunath Bazaar, Jammu 180001, India. Our artisans work across the Kashmir valley, and we ship worldwide.
