Is Pashmina the same as cashmere?

Pashmina is a type of cashmere - the finest grade, from the undercoat of the Changthangi goat of Ladakh and the high Himalayas. All Pashmina is cashmere; not all cashmere is Pashmina. The distinction is fibre diameter: Pashmina fibres are finer than standard cashmere, which is why the fabric is light and warm rather than bulky. How can you tell if a Pashmina shawl is authentic?

By feel first. Genuine Pashmina is exceptionally soft and gives warmth that breathes rather than stifles - synthetic and viscose imitations feel slippery and trap heat. Hand-embroidered work shows slight irregularity in stitch length and a reverse side that differs from the front. Price is also a signal: real Pashmina cannot be produced cheaply. Ask the seller where the fibre came from and whether the embroidery is hand or machine worked.

How do you care for a Pashmina shawl or cape?

Dry clean only, specifying both the Pashmina and any hand embroidery. Store folded in cotton or muslin rather than plastic, which traps moisture, and keep it away from prolonged direct sunlight. Never hang a Pashmina shawl for long periods - the weight distorts the weave. If it snags, ease the thread back through from the reverse rather than cutting it.
