DESCRIPTION
Vanmala, the garland of forest blooms, is the idea this set is built around. Every motif begins the same way: drawn by hand, carved into a wooden block, dipped in colour and calico-printed onto the fabric, one impression at a time. Slender dandelion sprigs are scattered evenly across the kurta, sleeves and pants, each printed in brown outline with a yellow centre. At the hem, the printing gathers into a dense procession of caparisoned elephants, fan-leaved palms, poppy pods and flowering stems, and over this the embroidery takes over: elephants filled in violet and green, hummingbirds worked in purple, ochre and green thread, with wings and tails raised above the printed line. The kurta is cut long and straight, its V-neckline framed by a panel of fine pintucks, and the three-quarter sleeves finish in a clean band of yellow facing that returns inside the side slits. Straight pants in the same off-white repeat the scattered sprigs, so the quieter print carries the eye down and the border holds the weight.
